Afghan Rulers Used Left-Behind UK Equipment to Locate Afghans Who Worked With Allied Troops, Inquiry Learns

An informant has told a parliamentary probe that British authorities left behind classified equipment allowing the Taliban to locate Afghans who worked with international military.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger

The whistleblower, known as Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were advised to relocate and switch their contact details to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are looking into official management of a massive leak of personal details involving approximately 19k Afghans who had requested to relocate to Britain to escape the Taliban.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A spreadsheet with their personal data, comprising identities, phone numbers and occasionally relative details, was mistakenly released by a worker employed at British military command in February 2022.

The incident became known only in August 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had requested to settle in the UK appeared on online platforms.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is this misconception that militant forces do not have the same sort of facilities that we have,” she told lawmakers.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. If they have mobile details, they are able to track your exact position. This is exactly how intelligence groups achieved.”

Under inquiry about regarding if authorities possessed necessary encryption, the whistleblower declared: “They have complete capability.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Early investigations presented to the investigation indicated that approximately fifty relatives and colleagues of people concerned by the leak had been killed.

A legal restriction concerning the breach was implemented in late 2023 and restricted relevant facts concerning it from public disclosure until recently.

Security Recommendations

Due to legal constraints, the source and the volunteer organization she was working with advised Afghan families they were working with that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been breached”.

“Our suggestion was that they moved when possible and switched their phone numbers. Those were the two main details that, should militant forces acquired this information, would lead to identification and capture,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

The whistleblower argued that government assessment conducted by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to state that the obtaining of the information by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.

“The crucial point is that affected people are not standing up to militant forces; they live secretly. The primary issue involves past work history.”

The source explained horrific abuse experienced by concerned people, comprising electric shock torture, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to try to get relatives to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
