Ghostface Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with Scream 7.

The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.

"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard reveals.

A Triumphant Return for Fallon Favorites

It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Weight of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he received the news from the original writer.

"I remember the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the original film was released, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.

"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every Halloween."

The Fear of Letting Down the Fans

Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved series.

"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"

Speculation and Excitement Run High

While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are somehow still living in a bizarre communal scenario. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also is on the table.

Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
