The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, hesitated to declare he would live there right away after his victory in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the need to dedicating my full attention on implementing the platform on affordability voters voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for official events, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
