Recent Drugs Celebrated as a 'Major Shift' in Treating Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea

The first new treatments for gonorrhoea in many years are being hailed as a "major milestone" in the fight against superbug strains of the infection, according to scientists.

An International Challenge

Gonorrhoea infections are escalating worldwide, with estimates suggesting more than 82 million infections per year. Particularly high rates are reported in the African continent and countries within the World Health Organization's Western Pacific region, which includes China and Mongolia to New Zealand. Within England, cases have reached a record high, while rates across Europe in 2023 were three times higher compared to the rates from 2014.

“The approval of new treatments for gonorrhoea is an significant and necessary step in the face of increasing worldwide cases, the spread of superbugs and the extremely scarce available drugs currently available.”

Public health authorities are deeply concerned about the surge in treatment-resistant strains. The World Health Organization has classified it as a "priority pathogen". Recent surveillance found that resistance to key first-line drugs like ceftriaxone and cefixime had risen sharply between 2022 and 2024.

Two New Treatment Options Secure Approval

Zoliflodacin, alternatively called Nuzolvence, was authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration in mid-December for combating gonorrhoea. This STI can lead to serious health problems, including the inability to conceive. Scientists anticipate that focused deployment of this new drug will help slow the spread of drug resistance.

Gepotidacin, created by the pharmaceutical company GSK, gained clearance in the same week. This treatment, which is employed against UTIs, was demonstrated in studies to be effective against drug-resistant strains of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

A Unique Approach to Creation

This new treatment was the result of a new, not-for-profit approach for medication research. The charitable organization Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership partnered with the pharmaceutical company Innoviva to see it through.

“This approval signifies a major breakthrough in the treatment of superbug gonorrhoea, which previously has been staying ahead of medical innovation.”

Testing Data and Global Access

According to findings detailed in a major medical journal, the new drug eradicated more than 90% of cases of the STI. This puts it on an equal footing with the current standard treatment, which involves a dual-drug approach. The trial involved over 900 volunteers from several countries including Belgium, the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand and the US.

As part of the agreement of its unique model, the non-profit has the rights to register and commercialise the drug in numerous low-income and middle-income countries.

Doctors directly involved have shared hope. Having a easy-to-administer therapy of this kind is described as a "revolutionary step" for gonorrhoea control. This is considered crucial to alleviate the strain of the illness for individuals and to halt the transmission of highly drug-resistant gonorrhoea worldwide.
