The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a desolate church.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
