A extensive search and recovery effort is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of lost sailing vessels transporting humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Naval Search and Rescue Operations Deployed

The Mexican government has deployed navy personnel and search planes to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than nine sailors, according to a official statement.

The boats had been scheduled to arrive in Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the statement clarified.

Background of Aid to the Island

Cuba has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country endures multiple power outages across the country.

"Both captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are fitted with proper safety systems and communication devices," an official for the convoy said.

The nine crew members are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Earlier Relief Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the nation.

That vessel, dubbed "a new Granma" after the yacht in which Castro returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, infant formula, cycles and foodstuffs.

Broader Political Context

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of efforts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the country came into effect.

International organizations have since warned of ""critical" lack of essential goods, with more than fifty thousand surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Political measures have increased over the past months, with comments from various leaders emphasizing the complicated situation regarding bilateral relations.

Reacting to recent proposals, a high-ranking official from Cuba declared that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of talks commenced, although their present status remains unclear.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to discover the vessels and secure the well-being of the crews.

At this time, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
