A budget proposal that would terminate the most extended government shutdown in US history is reaching the House of Representatives for a decisive ballot on Wednesday.

On the sixth week of the legislative standoff, congressional members are coming back to Washington to decide whether to pass a legislative agreement that would finance government departments for the next eight weeks.

Majority party officials voiced optimism the budget proposal would pass through the Congressional body, notwithstanding their narrow majority. But leading opposition members promised to vote against it.

"We're reopening our nation," he announced on yesterday at a military commemoration in Arlington, Virginia. "Never should have been shut down."

Effects of the Shutdown

The closure, which started on the first of October, has caused a public sector staff without pay, stopped food stamps for economically vulnerable citizens, and delayed air travel for passengers ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

GOP committee members brushed aside opposition proposals aiming to continue ending healthcare support - their key condition during the standoff.

The chamber is scheduled to reassemble at 4 PM Eastern (9 PM Greenwich Mean) to conduct sixty minutes of discussion on the proposal before a ballot.

Democratic Opposition

House Democratic minority leader Hakeem Jeffries of his constituency pledged to oppose the bill.

"We completely reject as Democratic representatives to this reckless Republican effort to persist in increasing the expensive lifestyle on ordinary citizens," he stated to the news network.

The Democratic leader has voiced disappointment with Senate Democrats who sided with GOP members on Monday night to approve the funding measure.

Key Issues

A central demand of minority members during the closure has been that the majority include in the budget legislation a measure to continue fiscal incentives that make medical coverage more affordable for millions of citizens.

But Republicans maintained solidarity and declined to compromise, agreeing only to allow a ballot next month on the insurance support, a proposal they had made weeks ago.

And there is uncertainty that provision will get through the Senate, while House Speaker Mike Johnson has yet to commit a vote on the tax credits in his legislative body.

Legislative Mathematics

The House leader has maintained congressional recess for nearly two months to pile pressure on opposition senators to agree a shutdown compromise.

And once the shutdown is over, budget writers have only 60 days to avert the subsequent closure.

Federal appropriations would subsequently be set to lapse on the end of next month.
