Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit program wrapping up—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Fan Response
Anyone might to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
